Appel Farms Cheese Processing Plant

A custom pre-engineered metal building was chosen by Appel Farms for the design build project of their new cheese plant processing facility. Why not use conventional construction? The efficiencies, cost, performance, maintenance and durability of a custom metal building outweighed the conventional approach, and highly specialized thermal detailing needed to be incorporated into the design and construction making a PEMB the better choice. An exo-structure design allowed the interior spaces to have seamless uninterrupted wall surface making the space even more efficient. A Kingspan insulated metal panel wall system and Star Building’s Double-Lok roofing system was used and the foundation and slab was carefully detailed and installed with constant oversight. The slab has over 14 floor drains, each with 4 way slopes from one to another.

Thermal isolation around the interior freezers and coolers must be impenetrable to frost heave and moisture drive, and careful detailing of the insulated metal panels to the metal building components was of utmost importance. This was only achieved through the knowledge and highly detailed craftsmanship of the entire team working on the project. The Appel Farms Cheese Processing Plant is one of a kind in Washington. Both Faber and Appel Farms take high pride in this project and what it represents. This project also received a Star Building Systems Master Builder Award – selected Best of the Small Manufacturing Category!
