Sedro-Woolley, WA - The long-awaited Kulshan Hotel is finally complete, and its owners and investors celebrated the event by having a grand opening and ribbon cutting on March 21, 2025. Situated at 807 Trail Rd, Sedro-Woolley, WA, the event was open to the public and was a celebration of an achievement in the development of Skagit County's hospitality industry.

The Kulshan Hotel, a 49-unit boutique hybrid, was built by Faber Construction, a top Washington State general contractor. The building serves an important purpose in the Sedro-Woolley district by providing flexible accommodations for short and long-term stays. With the city's urban growth, The Kulshan Hotel is well-timed to meet increased demand for high-quality accommodations within Skagit County.

“The Kulshan is more than another hotel—it’s a masterfully created environment combining boutique-style appeal and extended-stay practicality,” according to Eric Oettel, Project Manager at Faber Construction.

Boutique Comfort and Extended Stay Function

The Kulshan is not your average Sedro-Woolley hotel. It was built to be flexible, and it has 12 different floor plans, ranging from studio apartments to suites featuring separate bedrooms and living spaces. The aim was to provide the feel of home for visitors staying for weeks or months.

Each unit contains:

  • Built-in Cabinetry and Wardrobe Systems
  • Integrated entertainment systems
  • Personal climate control through mini-split HVAC systems
  • High-end finishes, carpet, and tile and vinyl floors
  • Full-service features like snack bar, breakfast, and on-site beverages

These qualities make The Kulshan Hotel a perfect option for corporate travelers, visiting professionals, and patrons requiring extended stays, particularly employees from organizations like Janicki Industries and other large employers nearby.

Local Partnerships and Community Collaboration

The development was assisted by close coordination with the City of Sedro-Woolley, who aided through design and permitting support. Hotel design consultant Jennifer Hogue from J2 Design assisted in honing the aesthetics, and owners Brandon and Kate Atkinson, and daughter Lauren Woodberg, participated directly in decision-making through the construction.

The project successfully addressed major engineering issues associated with soil conditions as well. With innovative solutions by Cobalt Engineering and other civil and structural collaborators, the team was able to save hundreds of thousands of dollars by avoiding unwanted groundwork.

Key local subcontractors included:
  • Right Way Plumbing and HVAC
  • Express Electric
  • GT Framing

Designed for the Future of Sedro-Woolley

As one of Sedro-Woolley's first extended-stay hotels, The Kulshan responds to existing demand gaps and readies the city for greater tourism and worker lodging demand.

"This project fulfills an immediate demand and looks ahead to upcoming demand," Oettel said. "It's a welcome addition to the community."

Despite experiencing difficulties such as a one-month backlog in casework delivery, Faber Construction reshuffled timelines, reallocated resources, and achieved the certificate of occupancy in January, proving its role as a durable hotel-building contractor within the Pacific Northwest.
