Project Updates

BELLINGHAM, WA - Faber Construction's Civil Division has started work on an impactful infrastructure improvement project in northern Bellingham: the rebuild of the James Street and Bakerview Road intersection. The work, which was commissioned by the city, started on March 31.

The key upgrade effort entails substituting the current signalized intersection for a contemporary roundabout. The 74-foot diameter roundabout will be constructed within the existing roadway profile and supported by newly built retaining walls. The upgrade aims to greatly enhance traffic flow within an increasingly burgeoning region that has outpaced its existing traffic facilities.
“Traffic through this section of the city has grown significantly over the last few years. The signalized junction wasn’t keeping pace,” explained the Faber Construction project manager. “This roundabout will make traffic flow more safely and more efficiently.”

The major features of the project are:
• A 30' x 60' x 12' stormwater detention vault for stormwater management
• Installation of the slide rail shoring system for safe and secure excavation under confined conditions (an 80' x 40' x 15' deep trench alongside live roadways
• Upgraded street lighting, sidewalks, bus stops, and crosswalks
• Reuse of existing asphalt for sustainable use

Faber Construction is also managing the contractor-designed stormwater vault and retaining wall components, which showcase structural and logistical proficiency.

Local businesses and suppliers who are part of the undertaking are:
• Sail Electric (electrical infrastructure)
• Langco (site concrete)
• Concrete Structures Northwest (stormwater vault)
• Cut All Concrete (saw cutting)
• Lakeside Industries (forthcoming paving)
• Bode's Precast and Ready Rock (retaining wall materials)

Traffic Impacts:

Starting on May 12, James Street will be closed two stages: first the northern half (15 days), then the southern half (10 days). Bakerview Road will be kept partially open with a minimum of one lane of traffic during the course of the work. The work on the road is scheduled to be finished by June, and finishing touches like lighting and landscaping will be done later this year. The upgrade will support increased volumes, alleviate congestion, and provide better overall safety for drivers, pedestrians, and riders of public transport. This undertaking demonstrates Faber's ongoing belief in enhancing the region's civil infrastructure through innovative solutions, meticulous planning, and close cooperation with municipalities and local stakeholders.
