When Parkview residents and parents voiced concerns about student safety, the City of Bellingham developed a plan—and Faber Construction brought it to life. The Parkview Safe Routes to School project addressed critical safety needs by creating safer travel routes for Parkview Elementary students.

We’re proud to announce that this project has earned our second AGC Build Washington Award, winning in the Highway/Transportation Under $5M category for 2025.

About the Parkview Safe Routes to School Project

Completed in November 2024, this $3.2 million project delivered essential infrastructure improvements for Bellingham’s growing Parkview neighborhood. Our work included:

  • New sidewalks and ADA-compliant access, ensuring safe routes for students and pedestrians.
  • A teardrop roundabout, improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety during peak school hours.
  • Upgraded stormwater systems, enhancing drainage and reducing flooding risks.
  • New bike lanes, promoting safer and healthier commuting options.

Self-Performing for Quality, Budget & Speed

Our Faber Civil team took charge and self-performed this project, allowing us to maintain strict quality control, manage costs, and stay on schedule. Despite unexpected site conditions, we:

  • Completed the complex roundabout in half the expected time.
  • Kept the entire project on track and within budget.
  • Ensured minimal disruption to the surrounding community.

Keeping Roads Open & Students Safe

With construction happening during the school year, safety was our top priority. During preconstruction, we worked closely with the City of Bellingham to analyze traffic patterns and develop a plan that minimized disruptions.

  • Maintained open roads and safe sidewalks so students could get to school safely.
  • Kept at least one lane open at all times during roundabout construction.
  • Implemented precise sequencing, signage, and flagging to ensure smooth traffic flow.

A Much-Needed Community Upgrade

Beyond a modernized roundabout, new sidewalks, and improved roads, this project has made a lasting impact:

  • Students now have safer routes to and from school.
  • Drivers experience better traffic flow and efficiency.
  • Bicyclists and pedestrians enjoy enhanced safety with dedicated bike lanes and walkways.

At Faber Construction, we take pride in delivering meaningful upgrades that strengthen our communities. As a local general contractor serving the Greater Bellingham Area for 38 years, this project stands out as one of our favorites of the year.

We’re honored to have partnered with the City of Bellingham to improve safety and accessibility for students and residents in the Parkview neighborhood.
